Schafer, 73, boasts a storied career spanning over four decades, during which he has worked with multiple national teams and prominent European clubs.

Most notably, he guided Cameroon to an Africa Cup of Nations triumph in 2002 and led the team to the FIFA World Cup that same year. His vast international experience includes stints with Thailand and Jamaica, as well as club-level roles with German sides such as Borussia Monchengladbach, Karlsruher SC, VfB Stuttgart, and Borussia Berlin.

As Technical Advisor, Schafer will work closely with Black Stars Head Coach Otto Addo to develop a competitive and cohesive team capable of excelling on the continental and global stages.

His dual role as Director of Football for the GFA will also see him overseeing the technical direction of Ghanaian football at all levels, with a focus on player development and long-term planning.

Speaking on his appointment, Schafer expressed his enthusiasm for the new challenge, saying, “Ghana has a rich football history and immense talent. I am honored to be part of this journey and look forward to working with the players, coaches, and administrators to elevate Ghanaian football.”

GFA President Kurt Okraku lauded Schafer’s credentials and expressed confidence in his ability to contribute to the progress of Ghanaian football. “Winfried Schafer is a proven winner with extensive knowledge and experience in football.
