Ghana has named a 23-man squad for this month’s international friendly against Mexico, blending experienced internationals with promising young talents as preparations intensify for upcoming competitions.
The squad, assembled under the guidance of head coach Carlos Queiroz, features a mix of players from Europe and the domestic league, alongside a number of U-23 prospects expected to play key roles in Ghana’s Olympic Games qualifiers.
Among the headline names is Majeed Ashimeru, who makes a welcome return after a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to a muscle injury that restricted his involvement at both club and national level. His comeback is expected to bolster Ghana’s midfield options significantly.
Also returning to the squad is Felix Afena-Gyan, who last featured for the Black Stars in May last year during the Unity Cup clash against Trinidad and Tobago in London. His inclusion signals renewed confidence in the young forward’s abilities.
The call-up also highlights the growing influence of Ghanaian players in Europe, with talents such as Abdul Aziz Issah of Barcelona B, Ebenezer Annan of AS Saint-Étienne, Ibrahim Osman of Birmingham City, and Paul Reverson of Ajax FC all earning spots in the team.
From the domestic front, Salim Adams, a standout performer for Medeama SC, leads the contingent of home-based players. He is joined by Ebenezer Abban of Heart of Lions, Ebenezer Adade of Dreams FC, and Nations FC captain Razak Simpson, whose consistent performances have earned him national recognition.
The friendly against Mexico presents a crucial opportunity for Coach Queiroz to assess his squad depth and fine-tune tactics ahead of competitive fixtures. It will also serve as a valuable platform for the U-23 players to stake their claim for selection in the Olympic qualifiers.
Ghana is scheduled to travel to Mexico on Friday, May 22, 2026, with expectations high as the Black Stars aim to deliver a strong performance and build momentum for the challenges ahead.
