Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer, has unveiled a comprehensive plan to revolutionize Ghana’s agriculture sector. His vision prioritizes agriculture as the number one focus of his government, recognizing that over 60% of Ghanaians are farmers.
By supporting farmers financially, technologically, and with expertise, Bawumia aims to ensure their financial stability, which in turn will propel Ghana’s prosperity.
Bawumia’s plan includes establishing processing plants in districts with a competitive advantage in specific agricultural products to enhance productivity.
This will be augmented by district agricultural mechanization centers, providing access to mechanized equipment for farmers ¹. Additionally, he plans to assist farmers who are into competitive crop cultivation with processing facilities.
The agricultural sector is crucial to Ghana’s economy, accounting for one-fifth of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and employing nearly half of the workforce.
Two-thirds of non-oil manufacturing depends on agriculture for raw materials. Bawumia’s focus on agriculture is timely, as the sector has the potential to drive economic growth and create jobs.
In the mining sector, Bawumia has outlined plans to promote responsible mining practices. This includes using geological survey mapping to identify gold locations, minimizing trial-and-error methods, and licensing mining operations to ensure miners can work responsibly without harassment.
Ghana has significant mineral reserves, including 13,000 metric tonnes of manganese and 16.86 million tonnes of high-grade trihydrate bauxite ³. The country is also poised to become West Africa’s first lithium producer, with newly discovered deposits amounting to 30.1 million tonnes.
By implementing these initiatives, Bawumia’s government aims to transform Ghana’s agriculture and mining sectors, driving economic growth and improving the livelihoods of farmers and miners.
