Former Ghanaian Education Minister and Member of Parliament, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has received a prestigious Certificate of Recognition from the United States Congress in honor of his outstanding contributions to education in South Los Angeles.
The honor was bestowed by Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove, who represents California’s 37th Congressional District, in recognition of Dr. Adutwum’s pioneering work in founding and leading the New Designs Charter Schools — institutions that have played a transformative role in the lives of students in underserved communities.
“Your unwavering commitment to New Designs Charter Schools has made a lasting impact on my congressional district. I wish you continued success in all that you do,” the citation reads, praising Dr. Adutwum’s dedication to educational equity and community upliftment.
Before returning to Ghana to serve in various ministerial roles, including as Deputy Minister and later Minister of Education, Dr. Adutwum spent many years in the U.S. education system. During that time, he founded New Designs Charter Schools to provide innovative, student-centered learning opportunities for inner-city youth, emphasizing STEM education and college readiness.
The Congressional recognition adds to Dr. Adutwum’s growing list of accolades, both at home and abroad, underscoring his lifelong commitment to education reform and empowerment. The acknowledgment from the U.S. Congress serves not only as a personal milestone but also as an inspiration for educators and policymakers working to close the opportunity gap for marginalized communities.
Dr. Adutwum expressed gratitude for the honor, stating that the recognition affirms the power of education as a tool for transformation and the importance of investing in the potential of every child, regardless of their background.
