Nasser Al-Khelaifi, the club president, believes Kylian Mbappe needs to sign a new contract if he intends to stay at Paris St. Germain.
At a press conference to announce Luis Enrique as PSG’s new manager after Christophe Galtier was fired, Al-Khelaifi gave his remarks.
The 24-year-old French striker Mbappe has informed PSG that he will not renew his agreement with them past 2024.
“Our position is very clear,” Al-Khelaifi declared.
“Kylian Mbappe needs to sign a new deal if he wants to stay; we want him to stay.
“We cannot allow the current top player in the world to walk away for nothing. That is not feasible.
When his contract ends after the upcoming season, Mbappe has the option of an additional year. However, he has stated that while he plans to remain with the French champions for the 2023–24 season, he does not intend to exercise the contract extension option.
If so, he would be entitled to a free summer departure.
Al-Khelaifi continued, “This is a French club and he has declared he is not planning to leave for free.
“It is not our fault if someone changes his mind,”
Mbappe, who initially joined PSG on loan from Monaco before making a 180 million euro (£165.7 million) transfer, has 212 goals in 260 games for the team.
In his six seasons at PSG, he has won five league titles and ended as Ligue 1’s top scorer each of the previous five seasons.
At the beginning of the news conference, Al-Khelaifi spoke to introduce Luis Enrique before addressing Mbappe after the Spaniard had addressed the media.
