The President’s Cup is an annual match played between two Ghanaian clubs to honor the sitting President.
It’s mostly played separately from the league games, and it’s between the two biggest clubs in the country, i.e. Asante Kotoko and Hearts Of Oak.
The time and structure have taken a shapeshift as the return fixture in the Ghana Premier League between Asante Kotoko and Hearts Of Oak will determine the winner of the President’s Cup.
Announced by the organizing body, GHALCA, the GPL match between Hearts Of Oak and Asante Kotoko scheduled for Sunday March 5 in Accra, will serve as the 2023 President’s Cup as Ghana celebrates Independence Day on Monday, March 6.
The winner of the game will be crowned champion with President Akufo Addo in attendance.
The game will be resorted to penalties to determine a winner if it ends in draw.
Speaking on this, the PRO for GHALCA, Patrick Akoto, confirmed this by saying “fixture congestion informed their decision”.
Hearts Of Oak are the current holders after after beating Asante Kotoko 2-1 to win it in 2022, with Asante Kotoko having the most titles (8).
