Sevilla are Europa League Champions after overcoming Roma on penalties in Budapest, the Spanish team was able to raise the trophy for a record-extending seventh time.
In the opening period, the champs came in second. They got off to a sluggish and lethargic start as Roma controlled the game’s tempo. Paulo Dybala scored the game’s first goal from the left side of the box after Jose Mourinho took a chance by starting him up front for the Serie A team.
The second half started with Sevilla taking the lead while Roma withdrew. Despite the team of Jose Luis Mendiliar playing more positively, luck had a significant role in the equalizer. Jesus Navas blasted the ball in from the right, and Gianluca Mancini deflected it to tie the score.
The game stayed in that spot throughout overtime before a penalty shootout decided the winner. Gonzalo Montiel successfully guided in the game-winning penalty kick after Roma missed their own, giving Sevilla their eighth Europa League triumph.
They win the trophy for a record-extending seventh time and earn a spot in the Champions League for the upcoming season.
Sevilla Mendilibar took half way in the season and has managed to take a mediocre Sevilla team to beat the ‘so-called’ Special One, who doesn’t lose finals.
Sevilla are 11th on La Liga table but goes ahead to win Europa League by beating Manchester United and Juventus on the way.
